Effects of Chemical Pesticides

Chemical pesticides are mostly used where large scale pest control measures are required. They not only exterminate pest population at one stroke, but also prevent their recurrence. But their negative impact on the environment and ecology is not fathomed fully yet. A lot of research results have come out lambasting the use of these poison compounds.

The greatest drawback is that it these poisons does not discriminate between harmful and harmless creatures that come in their way. Regular exposure can even harm the user too. Residue from these poisonous substances eventually gets into the vegetable and fruits on which they are applied, resulting in people ingesting lethal amounts of poison with harmful effects. Cases of physical and nervous disorders detected to be caused by over-use of insecticides now almost equal to that caused by pests itself.

Another irony about chemical pesticides is that even though they exterminate pests, they also help the pests developing increased resistance to these poisons, necessitating the use of more quantities in subsequent years. This further perverts the already injured habitat. It has been estimated that more than 95 percent of applied insecticides reach targets other than what was intended. Friendly species, air, water and soil have been perverted to a great extent due to the extensive use of them.

However, apologists for chemical pesticides point out that there is no justification to the argument for totally abandoning or banning them. Some even aver that the economies included in the sale and usage of these poisons and their positive effects - like ensuring food security - far outweigh their negative impacts. Research activities for developing new chemical pesticides with less negative impact on environment and its inhabitants are gathering speed. Many leading international brands are also into this activity.

Considering that awareness in the field is increasing and manufacturers are taking note of the mood of the masses, there is a bright chance that eco-friendly pesticides cutting out the chances of ecological imbalances may be available in the near future.

Many home plant pest problems can be easily solved by using a little insecticidal soap. It is easy and inexpensive to mix up your own organic insect killer at home. You will be saving money on pesticides and won’t have to worry about dangerous chemicals on your food.

This recipe works best on soft-bodied pests like aphids, thrips, white flies and spider mites. These are among the most common garden pests. Insecticidal soaps kill insects by entering the pest’s respiratory system and breaking down internal cell membranes. It is only effective when it is wet, so aim well. After it is dry it will not harm your beneficial insects. For heavy insect infestations, it is best to spray your plants again in a few days.

Here’s a really simple recipe for insecticidal soap.

1 tablespoon of soap

2 cups water

Mix thoroughly and add to spray bottle. Spray directly onto the insects on your plants.

Be sure to check the label on your soap first. The key to this recipe is to use regular dish soap, not detergent or anything anti-bacterial. You can also use pure liquid castile soap.

You can super-charge your organic insecticidal soap to make it stick to hard-bodied pests like fleas. It also damages the protective waxy coating on insects. Add either one tablespoon of mineral oil or a vegetable oil to your mixture. Sunflower or olive oil will work well, any vegetable-based oil will break down faster in your soil. Oil will help the mixture stay on these pests so the soap has a chance to begin working. But it will also stick to your ladybug beetles so be careful where you are aiming.

Some plants (especially ferns) are sensitive to soaps. Do not use a soap mixture on ferns. New growth on plants may be too tender for soap, so apply sparingly art first. Plants under stress may have a bad reaction to any insecticide. Plants that are under stress from drought should be soaked with water the day before you treat them. You should always test your mixture first on just one leaf on your plant. If it is fine the next day, your solution should be OK to use. It is better not to spray your plants in the middle of the day. Full sun (especially on hairy plants) can turn the water droplets into little magnifying glasses which can burn the leaves.

Many garden pests like to hide underneath the leaves of plants. For best results aim upwards and get under that foliage. Aim directly at those bugs. You may need to spray your organic pesticide again in a few days if you have a heavy infestation of pests.

Making your own insecticidal soap is a great way to save money on your landscaping budget and keep your vegetable garden organic at the same time.

Natural Insecticides Homemade

There has been widespread concern over the presence of pesticides and insecticides. Using chemical insecticides, even using organic insecticides can kill the destructive insects but will also kill the beneficial insects. Some of these methods are chemical in nature, such as insecticides and fungicides, this method of pest control was supposed to save us time, save our crops, and help us produce more food, but as luck would have it this method is dangerous. During their lifetime in the soil, plants are heavily sprayed with a number of insecticides, pesticides and fungicides. Most of these pesticides are hormone disrupters, neurotoxins, some may be carcinogenic, while others may cause genetic mutations. Just think about all environmental poisoning from just the pesticides, insecticides and other contaminants that are on most of our foods.

Natural Insecticide Products

Biological pest control includes insecticides that are derived from plants or other naturally occurring substances such as microorganisms. While others are more natural, like using beneficial insects to control harmful ones. Forests and jungles never need pesticides and insecticides because natural plants and herbs have their own mechanism in place. This form of insecticide proves to be harmless to plants and also much less harmful to other mammals than chemical insecticides.

Having a good guide to common garden pests and diseases is a good idea, since it can sometimes be difficult for the untrained eye to tell exactly what the problem is. If you have a home garden that you use organic garden pest control on you will realize how wonderful your vegetables or fruits taste when they are not pumped full of toxins. While you have to monitor the introduction of these natural pest control methods you will find there are great benefits to using the organic garden pest control methods.

However, if you live in an area where lawns are watered with municipal water (chlorinated) or are treated with inorganic fertilizers, or sprayed with pesticides and insecticides it is not a good idea to let your pets such as dogs eat the grass. They may also eat a bug that has been exposed to insecticides and they will often lick their pads to stop the burning, which can lead on to diarrhea.

Our Homes Are Targets Too

According to the National Pest Management Association, termites destroy more homes each year than fires or floods. You can almost call termites, terror-mites. When we think about how to kill termites, we never consider that they can force us from our homes, but they do eventually if the infestation is severe enough. If the pest control company uses the tent method or a stronger chemical, you may have to leave your home for many days to allow the chemicals to work and kill the termites. So it is no wonder that many people will risk the harm not only to the environment but also to themselves.

How would it be if you could rid yourself of an infestation and protect your home from attack by using homemade natural insecticides? Would you be more at ease? Most people would but if the propaganda were to be believed, the natural insecticide products are not as effective as the harsh chemical product.
Would you like to find some recipes for all natural insecticide products that really work? Most people would.

If you would like to be a little ‘greener’ with your annihilation of insect pests in your garden, try an insecticide soap. You can follow a homemade insecticide recipe or buy a commercial preparation. But, beware, though soap insecticide is relatively safe it should still be used with care.

With a growth in gardening as a popular pass-time, alongside a growing desire to be a little more environmentally friendly, their has been a boom in safe, Eco friendly and organic garden insecticide products. Insecticide soap is a particularly popular choice as it so non-polluting and non-toxic to people and pets. The nostalgia value of knowing our ancestors have used soap insecticides for generations probably helps. It is a really simple garden insecticide to make yourself too, which definitely appeals to the growing frugal nerve in us all too.

Soap is really safe but we should still exercise caution when using it as a garden pesticide. The idea that we are using something to kill insects should give the game away, that mild though it is, there is still some power in that spray.

Some plants are particularly sensitive to soap sprays. Buying a ready made formulation means you will get a list of plants to avoid. You can be sure the product has been tested thoroughly on a wide range of garden plants so should be fine for any not listed. If you are making a homemade insecticide you will need to be a little more cautious. As though we can say generally certain plants do not respond well to soap sprays, we cannot be certain how they will all react to yours. Soaps vary in alkalinity and strength so it is best to err on the side of caution, at least when you make a new batch up. If in doubt test a small part of a plant with a few applications before spraying the whole thing.

This is one area where the commercial preparations have an advantage over homemade insecticides - they are consistent. All their ingredients and formulations can be tested and then kept constant. Each time we make a batch at home, we have no control over whether the soap we are using has had its composition changed by its manufacturer.

Always opt for the mildest soap you can find when making a homemade soap spray. Try to avoid detergents (such as washing up liquid) as these are more likely to be potential dangers for your plants. That being said, I know many people repeatedly throw their dirty washing up water at certain plants with no adverse affects at all. The main thing is to be cautious with your prized plant specimens.

The other key point to remember is that your garden insecticide, although mild, may be harmful to some beneficial predator insects too. Insecticide soap is safe for many ‘helpful’ insects but is dangerous for predatory mites. These are the good guys who try to control spider mite in your garden. You must try to avoid spraying too often, and too indiscriminately or you will wipe out these beneficial insects too.

Mankind has been raising chickens for some ten thousand years. However, For most the reason for the domesticatioin of chickens if obvious: food by either meat or even the eggs. However, even in ancient times there was extra attention given to keeping the flock clean. To make this easy for you, make sure your http://www.chicken-house–plans.com/ include features for easy cleaning.

Nowadays, a typical family will treat their chickens like household pets, using them as a source for eggs. With the right breed of hen, you can get as many as 300 eggs a year - that’s a lot of eggs! Certainly egg production drops as the years pass, but that’s why it is so important to kee your chicken house clean and your chickens healthy.

Keeping the hen’s nesting area free from dirt and pests is an absolute must. Start by collecting your eggs on a frequent or regular basis. Frequent collection will prevent some of the issues in this area, and some folks who raise hens will carefully place some fake plastic eggs, rocks or even golf balls to entice their hens to lay eggs in one particular area.

Occasionally, the hens won’t want to leave the house to allow you to clean it. If this is the case, you can try to use something to shoo the hen out, but be careful she does not trample on any of the young chickens. The other thing you can do is wait until the hen leaves to deficate or eat; then close off the nesting area while you clean it.

As mentioned earlier, a clean hen house is necessary to keep away pests. If you raise chickens, you need to clean regulary to prevent mite infestation or Red Mites. You will know if your chickens are infested with red mites because egg production will drop and the chickens will peck at each other in an attempt to get the mites. Watch your flock for unusual pecking, or examine your chickens for bloody or bald patches.

The chicken mites can live as few as 5 days, but some can live up to 2 weeks This short cycle allows for fast growth and heavy infestations. They can live in the chicken house just as well as on the chickens themselves.

Keeping your chicken house and chickens clean is the best treatment, which is preventing the mites in the first place. If you do get an infestation, there are a number of insecticides available to minimize and eliminate external parasites. One very effective pest controls is "permethrin." Permethrin does have a long residual time in which it is effective, and that makes it a primary insecticide for treating your chicken house, surrounding areas like the chicken run and even your equipment. You can even treat the hens and roosters directly with a diluted version of permethrin..

Some other cures you may use to treat mites or even lice would be the use of wood ashes and diatomaceous earth (or DE). This is considered a non-chemical treatment that smothers the mites. There are newer products, such as Poultry Protector, which are a natural enzyme treatment.

This may sound corny, but cleaning the chicken coop can be a fun time, especially when involving the whole family. Kids love to chase the chickens out of the way for cleaning, and if you have good chicken house plans, your cleaning is built right into your chicken house designs. Cleanlieness may be next to Godliness, but we’ll be content with healthy, happy chickens and fresh eggs.

How To Get Rid Of Fleas - free article courtesy of ArticleCity.com

If you own a pet you will have fleas in the house from time to time. In some cases you may become infested with fleas. We have had as many as four cats at our house and we have been infested with fleas a few times. We only have two cats now so it is not as bad, but we still have to use the process I am about to tell you about.

You really don’t have any control if your pet goes out of your yard, but you will need to spray your own yard about two times during the summer months with a good flea insecticide. If you kill all the fleas in your house with out killing the little pest in the yard you will continue to have a problem inside.

One of the main reasons a house will become infested with fleas is, after you vaccum your house and put the vaccum away, every flea that was in the vaccum bag will crawl right back out of the vaccum cleaner and into the house and start multiplying.

The way to stop this is to take the bag out, spray some flea insecticide in the bag and tape the hole of the bag up. Then spray the insecticide around the house. If you will repeat this process every two or three days for two weeks you will not be infested with fleas any more.

You can resume your normal schedule of vaccuming after you clear up the infestation, but you will still need to tape the vaccum bag up just in case you pet brings a couple of fleas in from outside.

Everyone loves pets. Well, practically everyone. While pets are great, you often will have a problem with fleas getting into your carpet.

Dealing with Fleas in Your Carpet

As anyone with pets can tell you, keeping a house clean when you have a furry friend can be a challenge. From muddy paws, to hairballs and fuzz, pets present some unique cleaning problems - especially where cleaning floors and furniture is concerned. Carpets can be more difficult than other types of flooring, just because they generally tend to trap more dirt and fur, as well as smells and other unwanted debris. One of the things that having a pet can do to your carpet is bring in more guests: like fleas.

Fleas are those annoying little blood-sucking pests that come into your home clinging to that outdoor dog or cat. Their bites can cause itching and red bumps, as well as misery, for both your pet and you. Adult fleas spend all of their time riding on their hosts, which are usually your pets, and don’t spend time hanging out in your carpets or other fabric household items. Eggs, too, are found on animals; the adult fleas lay their eggs in the hair or fur of your pets.

The stage at which fleas really spend a lot of time in your carpet is at the larval stage. Here, they feed off of dried blood and other matter left in areas where your pet lays (this material is produced by the adult fleas, and falls off in these areas).

The only way to truly get rid of these flea larvae is by carpet cleaning - fleas don’t stand a chance if you follow some of these steps to kill them. Your first step is to vacuum. Believe it or not, this easy type of carpet cleaning - fleas can’t live through. If you vacuum regularly, you will remove eggs and larvae from the carpet, which will stop them from growing into the adult flea pests. After vacuuming, be sure to seal your vacuum bag in a plastic bag, and throw the plastic bag away outside immediately. This will stop the fleas from being able to escape back into your house.

You can also apply insecticide to your carpet. Be sure to keep pets and people off of the carpet that you’ve treated until the insecticide dries (it can be toxic, especially to pets and small children). Then, perform some regular carpet cleaning - fleas that have died, as well as any chemical residue, will be picked up easily with a good steam cleaning. Of course, to keep your home truly flea free, you need to treat the infested pets as well. This way, your carpets will stay clean and without fleas.

Termite Treatments Used in Sydney Australia

All Guard Pest Control uses & recommends Termidor as a low toxic, effective Termite Treatment for your home There area number of termite treatments available in Sydney Australia, but which are the most cost effective and what works the best to stop termites in their tracks?

The standard termite treatment involves applying termiticide as a continuous barrier in the soil around the house, termite baits, installing continuous termite shields at the top of the foundation, and/or termite reticulation systems. Other termite treatments include termiticide foam, using crushed granite (trade name Granitgard) or steel mesh cloth (Termimesh) as a physical barrier, moisture control, and wood elimination. A combination of methods are used for "integrated pest management," as many times a single technique is not enough.

Termite Baits
Termite baits are a great indicator of the presence of termites and are an effective way to kill the colony causing the problem. Sentricon makes such a system. FMC makes FirstLine, a termite baiting station using an insecticide stomach poison in a cellulose matrix. FMC is modifying their product to incorporate untreated stations that last longer than treated bait stations. The bait is a cellulose food treated with termiticide, a toxic substance and/or insect growth regulator. The food is wood or laminated-texture cellulose, which is favoured by termites. Termites eat the treated food and carry it back to the nest, reducing the size of the colony. The termiticide in the bait works slowly enough that termites have a chance to go back to the nest instead of dying near the bait, because dead termites repel other termites.

It’s not recommended by this firm as a standalone treatment, unless it is obvious where the termites are coming from. Well placed baits are a frontline indicator of termite activity and often used to supplement soil barrier treatments. We prefer to use Termidor for termite treatments in most circumstances, as it is a low toxic alternative which termites wander through treated areas at random and pick up poison to take back to the nest. Unlike high toxic repellents, it does not require a continuous barrier around your home. Termite baits may be used a supplement for effective termite control.

Why are termites a problem in Australia?

Termites (often incorrectly called ‘white ants’) feed on wood and serve an important function in nature by converting dead trees into organic matter. Unfortunately, the wood in buildings and other structures such as wooden power poles is equally appetising to termites, so they can cause serious damage which may be very expensive to repair. There are many species of termites in Australia, of which about 20 species can eat sound wood in buildings; those causing most damage to buildings are social insects that live in subterranean colonies that may contain up to 200, 000 individuals.

In order to maintain humidity and to protect themselves from extreme weather conditions, a colony (or nest) of subterranean termites may be up to 6-7 metres below the soil surface and have extensive tunnel networks that can extend up to 100 metres from the nest.

How can buildings be protected against termites?
Control techniques for termites can essentially be divided into two types, prevention and treatment. Preventative measures are easily applied during the construction of new buildings, but some (eg. stainless steel mesh, or a layer of granite chips) are not very suitable for existing buildings or structures.

Prevention of Attack.Building design can reduce the chances of termite damage. Important strategies include reducing the amount of timber used in buildings, a properly designed concrete slab with edges exposed for inspection for termite activity, or provision for easy under-floor inspections of timber floors. Installation of a reticulated system under the concrete slab can also to allow chemical barriers to be applied and re-applied whenever necessary.

Chemical barriers
Chemicals that are used to kill termites are called termiticides. Termiticides have differing modes of action, and several methods are used to apply them.

For many new buildings, creation of a termiticide-treated layer of soil surrounding and under the building form an integrated barrier together with the physical methods described above.

The termiticide is applied to the soil under the slab and around the footings, pipes, conduits and other structures of the house during construction to create a vertical barrier. Further loosened soil around the perimeter of the house, including around all pipes and service facilities, is treated during and after construction to from a horizontal barrier.

Timber intended for use in the construction of houses, outbuildings, fences and other outdoor structures is often treated with chemicals by dipping and pressure or vacuum impregnation.

1 The Australian Standards relating to termite management are: AS 3660.1 2000 Termite Management - Part 1: New Building Work; AS 3660.2 - 2000 Termite Management - Part 2: In and Around Existing Buildings and Structures - Guidelines; and AS 3660.3 - 2000 Termite Management - Part 3: Assessment Criteria for Termite Management Systems. Termite protection: available treatments and hazard information about termiticides Page 3 of 25

Treatment of infestation
Treatment of a termite infestation in an existing structure also requires an integrated approach, including destruction of termites within the timber structures, measures to locate and destroy the termite nest, re-establishment of a chemical and/or physical barrier, and regular inspections to detect any ongoing or new termite activity.

For existing buildings, where signs of infestation have been detected, chemical treatment is usually the best option for destroying termites and re-establishing a barrier.

Premise
Active Ingredient Imidacloprid a member of the relatively new class of chemicals called chloronicotinyls . It is used to create a barrier or treated zone in the soil where it attracts termites, which die within the treated zone.

Brand - Premise, from Bayer
Type - Chloro-Nicotinyl (an insect nerve inhibitor)
Toxicity - Rated S5. ‘Practically non-toxic’ both oral and dermal.
Odour - This water-based insecticide is almost odourless.
Longevity - The label claims ‘at least two years’. Bayer advise us that they are intending to re-label claiming 5 years.

Bayer’s printed information states ‘At CSIRO test sites, Premise was effective for a minimum of 2 years with more than 6 years control achieve at some sites. Trial work in infested buildings has shown that more than 90 per cent are still termite free 5-6 years after treatment.

Bayer also claim that Imidacloprid has some indirect colony control effect. In other words, it will kill termites without repelling them, and can have a negative effect on the health and numbers of any colony infesting the immediate area.

BiflexBrand - Biflex Aqua from F.M.C.
Type - Synthetic pyrethroid water based termiticide
Toxicity - Rated S6, oral - ’slightly toxic’, dermal - ‘practically non-toxic’.
Odour - This water based termiticide is almost odourless.

Longevity - the label claims ‘at least 10 years’ when applied at maximum strength. In practical conditions around a typical home, due to water exposure, disturbance of garden beds etc STC recommends re-treatment each 5 years.

A characteristic of Bifenthrin is that it binds very quickly and strongly to the soil particles. This makes it a good option where moisture movement in the soil may be a factor. On the downside, for the same reason, it tends to be filtered out by the soil so that it will not seep through the soil and penetrate some target areas as well as a product like as Imidacloprid.

TermidorBrand -Termidor from BASF
Active Ingredient Fipronil - Benzisothiazolin
Toxicity -Rated S6, oral-harmful if swallowed, dermal-may irritate skin, does not readily penetrate skin. Repeated exposure may cause allergic reaction.

Odour - has a slight vegetable oil smell.
Longevity - re-treatment each 5 years should be expected.

Termidor was launched in 2002 after some presentations from the USA, where it is used extensively. It has quickly built up a reputation as ‘the best’ termiticide, because of claims made that it has strong indirect colony control effects. The effectiveness of Fipronil as a termiticide is beyond doubt. Fipronil is an extremely low toxic active insecticide. It is applied by spraying, trenching and soil rodding as a chemical soil barrier around existing structures, and may also be used to protect poles and fence posts.

Accordingly, All Guard Pest Control regards this product as ‘top of the range’ and its cost premium is generally worthwhile on jobs where a continuous soil treatment is unlikely to be achievable due to building characteristics.

N.B. - All Guard Pest Control Pty Ltd cannot guarantee that colony control will occur, since this will depend on many factors including the termite pressure around the particular areas treated. The best security is achieved by the formation of a continuous soil treatment in conjunction with a regularly monitored termite baiting system.

Spider Mites

Spider mites are one of the most common pests that infest all kinds of plants, such as flower and vegetable plants, shade trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Find out more about this little creature here.

The spider mite is a common pest of plants that infest gardens and yards, affecting vegetable and flower plants, herbaceous plants, shrubs, and shade trees. Belonging to the family Tetranychidae, spider mites are classified as a kind of arachnid, and are related to daddy-longlegs, spiders, ticks, and scorpions. Unlike other insects, which have three parts of the body and six legs, the spider mite’s body is made up of one part with eight legs. They also do not have compound eyes, antennae, and wings. The spider mite is small in size and it is usually difficult to spot with the naked eye. They range in color from brown and red to green and yellow, according to their species and the seasonal changes that occur in them.

Many types of spider mites make webbing, especially when their populations are high, which provides them and their eggs protection from fluctuations in the environment as well as their natural enemies. The webbing produced by spider mites is often mistaken for webbing made by spiders and also the fluff that is created by cottonwoods.

Some of the common types of spider mites are: two-spotted spider mite; southern red mite; spruce mite; boxwood mite; clover mite; elm spider mite; linden spider mite; maple spider mite; oak red mite; willow spider mite; honeylocust spider mite.

The Life Cycle of Spider Mites

The honeylocust spider mite overwinters in its adult form in the crevices of the bark on trees, while the two-spotted spider mite overwinters in its adult form within the soil. Most of the common types of spider mites overwinter as miniscule sized round eggs on the bark and leaves of shrubs and trees, which hatch in the month of March or in April. The larvae that hatch from these eggs have just six legs initially, however, after they molt the nymphs become eight-legged. Both the larvae as well as the nymph look just like the adults. It takes about 5-21 days for the egg to develop into an adult, according to the species of spider mite as well as weather conditions. Each year can produce several generations. When the conditions are favorable, there can be a rapid increase in their population.

Spider mites that occur in broad-leafed evergreens and conifers are pests that infest in the cool weather. They are heavy feeders and reproduce rapidly in the spring season and in fall. The spider mites that occur in oak, willow, elm, linden, and honeylocust are at their most destructive during the summer season.

As a matter of fact, it is during the warm months that the activity of most species of spider mites peak. Their development is very rapid at this time, and it takes as little as a week for them to become full-grown after hatching. After they mate, the female spider mite can lay a dozen eggs everyday for two weeks. This high rate of egg production and rapid rate of development can result in high increases in their population.

The Type of Damage Caused by Spider Mites

The spider mite uses its sharp, needlelike appendage, known as stylet, to rupture the cells of leaves, then it pushes its mouth into the tear and sucks up the sap of each cell. This soon results in small cell patches being killed, which causes the surfaces of the leaves to become flecked or stippled. When there is a heavy infestation of spider mites in a plant, the foliage becomes gray, yellow, bleached, or bronzed. If left untreated, these plants lose their strength, become increasingly weak, and can even die.

How can Spider Mites be Controlled?

Spider mite populations can be controlled to some extent by certain types of predatory mites, thrips, and lady beetles, however, this occurs only after considerable destruction due to mite infestation. Most types of insecticides are ineffective against spider mites, while some like carbaryl may actually exacerbate the problem by destroying their natural enemies. Horticultural oils can be used during early part of spring or winter. In the summer, it is best to use an insecticidal soap or a miticide. Mites can be physically removed by using a forceful jet of water periodically on the plants.

House Centipede Control There are so many organic insecticides that are very effective at different kinds of pest. The best thing is you can prepare them in a very low cost. For example, the most common soap spray can be made with dishwashing detergent. Want Green Pharmaceuticals? Also, buying organic can help reduce your carbon footprint because organic products are produced naturally, without releasing carbon dioxide into the environment. When choosing an insecticide for that pesky insect problem. The Benefits Of Organic Vegetables And Their Seed Organic vegetables are not sprayed with harmful pesticides or insecticides. This helps reduce the chances of poisoning you or your family when they consume vegetables. On average, a child eats 4 to 5 times more cancer causing pesticides.

Carpenter ants cause a lot of damage in homes due to them using wooden structures to build their nests in. Find out more about them here.

Carpenter ants are large sized ants, ranging in size from the queen being 19.1mm ( inch) to worker ants measuring around 6.4mm (1/4 inch). In fact, the winged queen can even be up to 1 inch in size. As for the color, they are usually black, although they can sometimes even be black and red.

The Habitat of the Carpenter Ant

Belonging to the genus Camponotus, they are called carpenter ants since they make their colonies in wood. In nature, carpenter ants build their nests in trees as well as rotting stumps of wood and logs. But, they also make their nests in wooden structures in the home and outside, such as telephone poles. Usually, carpenter ant nests in the home are found in windowsills, roofing material, porch pillars, and any wood that is contact with the earth.

The wood that is excavated while the carpenter ants make their nest is not eaten by them, and instead is deposited in small piles outside the entrance of their colony. The wood in which they make their nests is used only for their nesting requirements. They keep their nesting sites clean and smooth, and do not line them with moist soil like termites do.

The Physical Features of Carpenter Ants

Ants can be divided into various types, such as: queens, males, and workers. In the carpenter ant species, the workers are polymorphous, or that they occur in various sizes.

There are several other species of ants that are sometimes mistaken for carpenter ants. One of the best ways of distinguishing carpenter ants from other species of ants is by the following physical features: the upper surface of the thorax is evenly rounded; the waist has only a single petiole, or node. Also, unlike the carpenter ant, the other species of ants do not infest wood.

The Breeding Habits of the Carpenter Ant

The nesting colonies that carpenter ants make are usually long lasting. A single queen that is fertilized establishes each colony by setting up a nesting site in a hollowed out space in the wood. The queen then produces a brood of workers first, using her salivary secretions to feed them. During this period, the queen does not feed herself nor leave the nest. Once the workers grow, they have the job of collecting food in order to feed the other larvae that are younger. The population of the colony thus continues to increase rapidly, with the supply of food becoming more regular. It is only when a colony has 2,000 workers, or more, that it reaches maturity, and has the capacity to produce young males and queens, which can take about 3-6 years, or even more. After a colony does reach this stage, it will continue producing winged males and queens, which fly away from their nesting sites in order to mate and form new colonies, which usually occurs from May to July.

The Kind of Damage Caused by Carpenter Ants

Although carpenter ants do not usually structurally damage buildings, however, since they hollow out wood for their nesting sites, and since these are long-lasting, it leads to considerable damage to wooden structures over a period of time. According to recent evidence, it has been observed that they cause a significant amount of damage to even foam insulation.

How to Control Carpenter Ant Infestation

One of the main methods of controlling carpenter ant infestation is locating and destroying their nesting sites. According to recent studies, carpenter ants use distinguishable trails of scent to travel between the parent nest and satellite colonies. They also depend on these scent trails to provide guidance to their nestmates about food locations. Homeowners can keep track of this trailing characteristic of the carpenter ant to find and get rid of their nests, by using an insecticide spray meant for this purpose.
