Cockroaches, Rodents, Flies in a Restaurant - Is There a Minimum …

All food establishments and facilities (restaurants, delis, cafeterias, bars, grocery stores, meat and seafood markets, wholesale and retail warehouses, mobile carts and trucks etc.) must be maintained and operated so as to prevent the entrance and harbor of vermin. Vermin includes mice, rats, flies, cockroaches and other food-infesting insects. This is state and local health and safety law throughout the U.S. and in most countries, believe it or not. It’s the lack of government enforcement and or business practices that is the problem.

Contrary to what you may have heard, there is no acceptable or allowable number or amount of vermin in a food facility. Vermin are strictly illegal in all areas of the establishment, which includes the kitchen, food or equipment storage rooms, restrooms, employee locker and break rooms, customer service and seating areas, trash storage areas and exterior premises. They’re illegal not because they are unsightly, but mainly because they are known carriers of numerous dangerous, disease causing microorganisms that can be transmitted to your food, the food contact surfaces etc. potentially causing a serious food poisoning. They also contaminate the food with their hair, fecal droppings, urine, saliva, body parts and general filth. Need I say more?

Vermin in a food facility is a very serious problem and a public health danger, and should be immediately reported to your local Environmental Health Food Inspection Program. A heavy infestation of cockroaches or rodents will sometimes give the establishment a recognizable musty odor. If you detect this odor or any out of the ordinary odor, be wary about patronizing this establishment. A restaurant and any food facility should always smell clean and of fresh food. Anything else could mean something is wrong.

I cannot count the number of individuals, including restaurant and market managers and employees, I’ve come across over the years that believe cockroaches, rats, mice etc. are in every restaurant and food facility, and are as much a part of the establishment as the customers. These people also believe that you can never completely eliminate vermin once they’ve established themselves. Both of these statements are of course, false.

All types of food facilities, even the newest, nicest, most expensive, elegant restaurant can become infested with vermin. It is fairly common because a restaurant especially, is an ideal environment for cockroaches, rats, mice, flies etc. to thrive. But with good sanitation practices and thorough rodent and insect proofing, extermination and insecticide treatment, one can readily eliminate and prevent infestations. I’ve not only seen it happen first hand, but as a government inspector ordered food facilities to eliminate a vermin problem countless times.

If a food establishment or facility cannot fully eliminate the vermin, the inspector is duty-bound to either suspend their permit and order them closed and or take legal action and have the local district or city attorney file a criminal misdemeanor complaint against the business and its owner(s). A permit may be suspended immediately, depending on the severity of the infestation. Some jurisdictions may also issue immediate fines or penalties in the form of a ticket or citation.

In many older buildings vermin can be more difficult, but again, certainly not impossible to eliminate. The main reason for this is that there are many more hiding spaces in older buildings that are not easily accessible for cleaning, extermination, etc. There may also be other non-food businesses adjacent to, or in the same building that are doing little or nothing to help eliminate the vermin within their space. Insects, such as cockroaches, can find other things to eat when food or wastes are not available.

So what are the possible solutions to these problems? Here are a few answers:

oA good inspector and or a pest control operator will assist the business in finding those hiding areas that are not so easily accessible and have the business either do what is necessary to make those spaces accessible or have them completely sealed off.
oA good inspector will investigate adjacent food and non-food businesses and issue orders to eliminate the vermin from their space as well, and have the two or more businesses coordinate pest extermination on the same day (vermin are illegal in non-food businesses as well).
oThe inspector should point out all the possible ways the vermin can gain entry into the establishment and issue corrective orders to vermin-proof those areas.

When it comes to vermin proofing, newer food facilities have a better likelihood of preventing harbor. Newer facilities must go through a detailed plan-check process prior to opening, where all areas must be designed to prevent and discourage vermin harbor. All ceiling, wall and floor surfaces in certain areas of the facility must meet strict standards.

To learn if your favorite eating and shopping locals have cockroaches, rats, mice, flies or other vermin problems, or any serious health and safety violations, look them up on your local Environmental Health Food Inspection Program’s web site, or contact them directly by email of phone to ask how they publish inspection results. You can even request a copy of the facilities latest inspection report. All this information is public record.

Growing Commercial Applications of Zeolites

Containing alkali and alkaline materials, Zeolites are a unique group of minerals characterised in construction by their crystalline and hydrated aluminosilicates properties. Their structure is based on a three dimensional framework structure of silica-oxygen tetrahedra. Arranged in a honeycomb network, the crystal framework is characterised with numerous pores holding negative charges which are balanced with cations such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.

There are approximately 40 different Zeolite types and their occurrence depends on conditions during formation. Mines located in the North Island of New Zealand are renowned for the production of clinoptilolite, a notable variation in the zeolite group which are young in age and contain unsurpassed absorption qualities. Zeolites have been utilised for their unique properties for ionic absorption in many commercial applications. Their large internal surface area allows them to absorb liquids efficiently, with the ability to absorb up to 70% in their own weight as a liquid. These qualities make the zeolites a perfect solution for absorbing odours, cations from wastewater and as a base for slow release fertilisers. Additionally, Zeolite granules, which can be modified to suit specific applications, are an ideal chemical carrier for insecticides, fungicides, pesticides and industrial chemicals. The open crystal structure of the Zeolite combined with high moisture holding capacity and high cation exchange capacity, allows the Zeolite to be used as an active carrier.

Due to these properties, zeolites have a lot of important applications in chemical technology, with the range of use ever increasing. One of the most important fields of application of zeolites is their use in the process of heavy metal cations immobilisation. Natural zeolites are important aluminosilicates in absorption processes because of their low cost and selectivity. In environmental applications, zeolites have been studied extensively to remove harmful substances from wastewater by absorption and ion exchange processes. Many toxic heavy metals and organic pollutants have been discharged into the environment as industrial wastes, causing serious soil and water pollution. Advanced treatment units are essential in the removal of such pollutants, with absorption and ion exchange processes being the most common technologies used in advanced wastewater treatment. In recent developments, zeolites have been considered for radioactive waste treatment due to their high cation exchange capacities.

Advancements in the carrier effect of zeolites has created new commercial opportunities for the mineral, including the development and manufacture of new construction products as well as building materials, which have been successfully applied to overcome construction difficulties. In modern society, China has evolved to be the largest user of zeolites, with the highest consumption being utilised in cement production. The unique properties of Zeolite as a carrier agent means that it can be used as a blended material in most of the cement plants to solve production and use issues, such as volume stability concerns of hardened cement. Recent research has shown that the use of Zeolite can prevent bleeding, segregation and delamination of fresh concrete so as to make the pumping process easier, decrease permeability of hardened concrete, enhance durability, increase concrete strength and minimise cracking caused by shrinkage. In response to its successful application the cement industry, the development of a range of new building products are currently under investigation utilising the unique characteristics of Zeolite, as a carrier agent promoting the ion exchange and an absorption functions, in an effort to solve current problems in building design and construction.

Using Neem Insecticide - Seven Things You Must Know Before You …

The neem tree (Azadirachta indica) is an incredibly versatile plant with many uses. In India it is known as "the village pharmacy"–over 75% of Ayurvedic remedies contain some form of neem!–and lately the tree has also been called "the world’s most researched tree."

But even though neem has been used traditionally for several thousand years it is still relatively unknown in the western world.

Apart from the seemingly all powerful neem oil–pressed or extracted from the seeds–there are a whole range of other neem products: neem capsules, neem soap, neem tea, neem bark powder…

Most people have heard about neem oil only and they don’t know much about it.

For neem to live up to its reputation you need to use the right neem product the right way, at the right time for the right purpose!

In this article I will look at the most common use of the oil: as an insect spray in the garden.

Neem oil is an absolutely wonderful alternative to chemical insecticides because it is totally non toxic to humans. If used correctly it works wonders and it only affects the bad bugs while leaving the good bugs unharmed.

The keywords in the above sentence are "if used correctly." Here are seven things you should understand about neem oil before you use it in the garden.

Neem oil is NOT an instant knock down insecticide. Neem does not kill insects or grubs instantly! It acts as a feeding repellent and it also interrupts their breeding cycle. Neem is similar to insect hormones. When insects take up the neem ingredients they "forget" to eat, to mate, or they stop laying eggs. Some forget that they can fly. If eggs are produced they don’t hatch, or the larvae don’t moult. Don’t conclude neem doesn’t work just because it doesn’t kill everything instantly. Neem oil needs to be used regularly. Spray it once a week to once a fortnight and it WILL protect your garden from sucking and chewing bugs.

Neem CAN kill honey bees. Neem is not toxic to honey bees or other beneficial insects but it can certainly kill them! Any oil you spray can coat insects and suffocate them. In that respect neem oil makes no difference between good and bad bugs: coat them with oil and they suffocate. To protect beneficial insects, only spray neem in the very early morning or late afternoon, when insects are least active. Once the oil has dried it only harms the bad bugs.

Neem CAN harm your plants. If a little bit helps, then more will help better. Right? Wrong! Any oil spray can burn plants. If you spray during the day it burns better. Again, use neem spray early in the morning or late in the afternoon, so it can dry before the sun hits it. Some plants are so sensitive, they don’t need the sun to suffer. Having their delicate leaves coated with too much oil is bad enough. Stick to the instructions! Use the lowest concentration and do a little test application first. Neem oil is strong stuff. A little goes a long way.

Neem CAN harm aquatic organisms. This aspect is rarely mentioned. Research studies showed that neem ingredients can hurt many aquatic organisms, including fish and tadpoles. Luckily it takes more than just traces to do damage. Spraying near ponds is generally safe, but do not spray neem directly into the water.

Neem oil is NOT registered as an insecticide. In most countries neem oil is not registered as an insecticide or insect repellent. So the sellers are not allowed to call it that or to mention that it kills or deters insects. If you try to buy neem at the local hardware store, don’t look in the aisle with the poisons. Rather look for leaf polish… Seriously, that’s what one manufacturer sells it as. The easiest way to find it? Ask for it. But beware…

All neem oils are NOT made equal. Many people hear about neem oil, go to the hardware store or garden center and buy some "neem plant spray" or "neem based insecticide" or other ready to use mixture of who knows what. Some of those bottles contain nasty chemicals with a bit of token neem. Few contain raw neem oil–the most potent neem oil–but rather a clarified hydrophobic extract. Those extracts are not as powerful as the raw or crude neem oil. The best neem oil to buy is raw, cold pressed, organic oil with a high Azadirachtin content. Azadirachtin is the main insecticidal ingredient and most sellers of good neem oil advertise the high Azadirachtin content. By the way, you are unlikely to find the raw oil at your local hardware store. Try health food stores instead!

Neem oil STINKS! The descriptions of the smell vary. Rancid peanut butter, rancid garlic, rancid burnt onions… do you detect a theme here? How about garlicky peanut butter with some rotten eggs thrown in?

Sleep Tight - You Will Need To Get Rid Of Bed Bugs First

Bed bugs have returned to the bedrooms of Britain, and they are even harder to get rid of than before. Back in the 1930s, around a quarter of UK houses were infested with bed bugs, but the advent of synthetic insecticides - such as DDT after the Second World War - solved the problem, at least for a while.

By the 1980s bed bugs were almost eradicated in developed countries, but the last decade has seen a dramatic increase in infestations, both in Europe and the US. It is thought that one of the reasons for the dramatic increase in bed bug populations in recent years, is due to them developing resistance to various pesticides such as DDT and organophosphates.

Another reason is the move by pest controllers from using broad-spectrum insecticide sprays to eliminate common insect pests in buildings to using species-specific pesticide baits. Broad-spectrum sprays help to control bed bug infestations, but baits do not.

Mainly active at night, bed bugs are parasitic insects, which have adapted to feeding on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals, such as bats and birds. The common bed bug ‘Cimex lectularius’, is found in temperate climates, and is best adapted to human hosts. Adults are wingless, reddish-brown insects with flattened oval-shaped bodies about 4mm long and 2.5mm across.

During daytime bed bugs tend to nest in mattresses, bed frames and other dark crevices out of sight, which makes them difficult to spot. Typically, first signs that bed bugs have set up home are tiny black dots of faecal matter, blood spots on bed linen and/or cast skins.

Some people react quite badly to bed bug bites, developing intensely itchy, raised welts. Because they are so tiny, elusive and nocturnal, establishing the presence of bed bugs can be difficult, especially with low-level infestations. Daily monitoring is recommended, using a torch to investigate dark crevices and niches.

Various do-it-yourself methods to get rid of bed bugs have been espoused over the years. Traditional plant-based repellents include black cohosh, eucalyptus oil, black pepper, wild mint and cannabis.

Steam cleaning and spraying rubbing alcohol on bed frames may get rid of adult insects and eggs, while fabric steamers can be used to disinfect mattresses and other soft furnishings. 1000 Heating to at least 49C for 20 minutes will kill bed bugs, as will freezing temperatures.

However, the most effective DIY option for low-level infestations is to treat the sleeping area with an insecticide approved for bed bug eradication. All possible hiding places need to be sprayed or dusted, with a second application 10 days after the first, in order to kill any emerging nymphs and surviving adults. For heavy infestations, a commercial pest control company should be consulted.

Once bed bugs have been eradicated, the bed can be protected to prevent any bugs remaining in the sleeping area from climbing back on to feed. Home-made bed bug barriers can be made using petroleum jelly, double-sided carpet tape or standing the bed legs in trays of water.

Mechanical insecticides, such as diatomaceous earth, which kills bed bugs through dehydration in a few days, can also be used as a barrier method and to trap the insects.

Bed bugs can spread by hitching rides in clothing, luggage, bedding, mattresses and furniture, as well as on wild animals and pets. Adults can go for a year without feeding, and bed bug eggs, with an incubation period of several weeks, are not killed by all approved pesticides. Patience and vigilance are therefore needed to prevent recurrent infestations.

Managing Wood-boring Insects

To keep your trees healthy, one will want to watch out for what is called wood-boring insects. These insects are considered secondary invaders, which means if your tree is already unhealthy, infestation of these insects will only damage them more. So what can you do to avoid these wood-boring creatures? According to the local extension agency, here are a few good horticultural practices:

Select well-adapted species of trees and shrubs that are not commonly attacked by woodborers in your area. Arizona ash, birch, cottonwood, locust, soft maple, flowering stone fruits (such as peaches and plums), slash pines (in west Texas), willow and poplar are especially prone to borer attack.
Choose and prepare a good planting site to avoid plant stress, freeze damage, sunscald and windburn.
Minimize plant stress and use proper watering and fertilization practices.
Avoid injury to tree trunks from lawn mowers, weed trimmers or construction.
Promptly care for wounded or broken plant parts using pruning or wound paint during all but the coldest months of the year.
Properly thin and prune during colder months.
Remove and destroy infested, dying or dead plants or plant parts, including fallen limbs.
Wrap tree trunks and limbs with quarter-inch hardware cloth spaced about 1 1/2 inches from the tree’s surface where woodpecker damage is likely. Sometimes wrapping trunks to prevent borer attack is ineffective and may, under certain conditions, increase the rate of infestation. Using plastic trunk protectors to help prevent injury from lawn mowers and weed trimmers is a good idea.

So what about the use of pesticides, you may ask? Once trees and shrubs are infested, non-chemical options for borer control are limited. One option is to remove and destroy heavily infested or injured plants. Damage sites also can be inspected closely to determine if the larvae stages can be extracted from the plant with a pocketknife, wire or other suitable tool.Again, it is important to remember that stressed, unhealthy trees can be attacked repeatedly and will need repeated applications of insecticide indefinitely. In most cases this is neither economical nor environmentally justified. When chemical treatments are used, efforts always should be made to improve overall tree health.

Insecticide products reg 1000 istered for borer control are applied as sprays to the trunks and branches, and are non-systemic, residual insecticides (e.g., bendiocarb, carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, endosulfan, es-fenvalerate, f luvalinate, lin-dane, methoxychlor, sumithion). While these products do not kill larvae that have already penetrated the sapwood or heartwood, they will kill adult and larval stages tunneling through the treated bark layer. These are primarily a preventive treatment. Some products (those containing paradichlorobenzene and ethylene dichloride) act as fumigants to repel egg-laying adults or kill accessible larvae.

Trunk injection products (containing acephate, dicrotophos and oxydemeton-methyl) are registered for treatment of some borers. These products are supposed to work by delivering insecticides into the cambium and phloem tissues where borers feed. These injections are most effective against sap feeding insects and rarely affect woodborer larvae. Research has shown that damage caused by inserting the injection devices into trunks can be significant.

One way to protect your trees is to consider where these wood boring insects are coming from. Most adult woodborers emerge from firewood stored indoors. While most of these insects are not considered harmful, old house borer and powderpost beetles will attack seasoned, dry wood inside the home. Treating firewood with insecticide is both ineffective and potentially dangerous to the homeowner. Wood should be stored outdoors away from the house until just before use. If firewood is infested with borers it can be treated by wrapping it in a tarp and allowing sunlight to heat it. Stacking wood layers in alternate directions will help it dry and reduce areas that can harbor insects.

By practicing these few things, you could save yourself a lot of time and money in protecting your trees.

Mosquito Spraying: Is It Dangerous For You Health?

Mosquito spraying is one of the most commonly used methods to stop the breeding of these nasty insects. Due to the fact that there are chemicals that are spread over areas where people live, mosquito spraying raises a lot of question like : are those pesticides safe for my health? Does it affects my pets ? What about the objects left outside are they affected by mosquito spraying? And so on. In this article we will try to answer to some of these questions.

Mosquito spraying is done using mounted fogging units to apply insecticides as an ultra-low-volume (ULV) spray. These units spray units dispense very fine aerosol droplets (fog) that stay aloft and kill mosquitoes on contact. The amount of insecticide used in mosquito spraying is small compared to the area treated, usually about 3 to 5 ounces per acre, which minimizes exposure and risks to people and the environment. Mosquito spraying is also done by thermal foggers that use an oil carrier that is heated to disperse the pesticide in a dense smoke-like fog.

During mosquito spraying , flying mosquitoes within the treated area are killed. Although the local mosquito population is reduced for a few days, fogging does not prevent mosquitoes from re-entering the area.
The most commonly used products in mosquito spraying are pyrethrins, synthetic pyrethroid insecticides (such as Scourge and Anvil )and malathion. Pyrethrins are insecticides derived from the extract of chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethroids are human made forms of pyrethrins. Both of them act as contact poisons, affecting the insect’s nervous system. For mosquito spraying they are combined with a synergist (such as piperonyl butoxide) that allows the insecticide to be more effective by restricting the enzyme that insects use to detoxify the pyrethrins.

Pyrethrins and pyrethroids are use in mosquito spraying without posing unreasonable risks to human health when applied according to the label although, in high dosage, pyrethroids can affect the nervous system, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, runny or stuffy nose. Regarding the wild life and the environment these two insecticides do not pose unreasonable risks, also. When used in mosquito spraying they are low in toxicity to mammals, and are practically nontoxic to birds. However they are toxic to fish and to bees. Therefore E.P.A (En 1000 vironmental Protection Agency) prohibits the mosquito spraying to open water or within 100 feet of lakes, streams, rivers or bays.

Malathion is an organophosphate insecticide that has been registered for the first time in the United States in1956. It is used to kill insects on agricultural crops, on stored products, on golf courses, in home gardens, and in outdoor sites where trees and shrubs are grown at home and also used in mosquito spraying. Malathion comes in two forms: a pure form of a colorless liquid and a technical-grade solution (brownish-yellow liquid), which contains malathion (greater than 90%) and impurities in a solvent. The technical-grade malathion smells like garlic.

For mosquito spraying, this substance is applied at a maximum rate of 0.23 pounds (or about 2.5 fluid ounces) of active ingredient per acre, so it doesn’t pose unreasonable risk to human health. However, at high doses, malathion, like other organophosphates, can overstimulate the nervous system causing nausea, dizziness, or confusion. Severe high-dose poisoning with any organophosphate can cause convulsions, respiratory paralysis, and death. Malathion degrades rapidly in the environment, especially in moist soil, and it displays low toxicity to birds and mammals, but is highly toxic to beneficial insect (ex honey bees) too. Therefore E.P.A set a few regulations for the use of this product.

So these would be the most important aspects of mosquito spraying that you should be concerned about along with the main chemical components used in this process.

Protection of Garments Against Moths

Introduction

Different sorts of fabrics are used for manufacturing of various types of garments. Silk, wool, cotton, rayon, polyester, satin, velvet, linen, etc are some examples . The fabrics are of two types namely- natural fabrics and man-made fabrics. The natural fabrics are obtained from various sources of nature like wool from sheep, silk from silkworm, cotton from cotton plants, etc. These fabrics are prone to breeding of insects like moths, fungi etc. on them.

One of the common insect is the clothes moth. They are of brown color and flat in shape. They generally attach to the woolen clothes and prefer dark surroundings. Clothes can be damaged even by their larvae. There are many methods through which the damaged caused due to clothes moths can be controlled like - freezing, usage of insecticide, dry cleaning of clothes, etc. Maintaining low level of humidity level in the atmosphere of the house facilitates in checking out their growth rate. Prevention is always better than cure therefore maintaining cleanliness in the house and in the closets is the best option. But if problems increase to an extent then insecticide use is the last option.

Protection inside storage units

When clothes are not stored and maintained properly, the chances of clothes moths damaging the garments increases. It should be made sure that the clothes when kept in the closet should be clean and dry without any trace of insects. Also the closet in which they are kept should be tightly and securely constructed. Many things like naphthalene balls, closet fresheners, flakes, moth balls, etc. could be kept in the closets or wardrobes to keep away the moths. These items should be kept out of reach of children as these products are poisonous in nature. They are made up of chemicals and strong in nature, therefore when these items if placed in close proximity with plastic hangers, bags or buttons could result into their melting. The vapors created by them kill the insects breeding on the garments.

Dry Cleaning and Laundering of clothes

Washing the clothes in hot water is the easiest and cheapest way of killing the clothes moths. The fabrics that are washable at home could be cleaned by this method. Whereas the woolen and pure silk clothes have to be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning and laundering prevents the growth of clothes moths as these insects prefer spoiled unhygienic clothes to clean ones.

Freeze and heat the clothes

One of the methods to kill clothes moths is by sterilizing the clothes with dry ice where the temperature is kept below 18°F. And in heating the temperature is kept above 120°F. Treatment of fabrics by such extreme temperatures destroys the insects.
Prevention and reduction

These clothes moths harvest mainly on woolen and old fabric scraps. Therefore these items should be cleaned regularly and woolen clothes should be exposed to sun once a month, as the heat of the sun kills insects because they cannot bear the heat and light of the sun. Cleaning of woolen clothes by vacuum cleaner or brushing them is also a good option.

Usage of insecticides

When all other moths control methods prove inefficient, then spraying of insecticides on clothes proves beneficial. These insecticides containing pyrethrin can be sprayed directly on clothes provided the fabrics don’t stain easily and are not very delicate like silk, satin, velvet, etc. Before using them make sure to read the directions for usage and warning instructions.

Care for Special fabrics

There are certain fabric items which require specialized care and treatment to protect them from the clothes moths, like home furnishings, fur items and carpets. The best way to protect fur items is storing them with moth balls, flakes or crystals. Regularly try to air the furs. Do not spray insecticide on them.

The rugs and carpets of small sizes could be dry cleaned. In case of wall to wall carpets insecticides could be applied on their edges and on both sides. The amount of spray on upper surface should be less in comparatively in order to avoid stains. Sometimes animal feathers or hair are filled or added to various home furnishings. To keep them moths-free they could be treated by fumigation by dry ice or pest control in the storage units.

Fact tips

The clothes which are more prone to clothes moths should be dry cleaned at regular intervals and stored in airtight containers.

Usage of cedar wood also discourages the growth of moths, therefore if possible store woolen clothes in cedar chests or trunks.

Immediately clean the food stains from the clothes as if you leave them it promotes the growth of moths. Do not spray perfumes on woolen items, but could be spayed on to other fabrics and skin. The strong smells of perfumes don’t attract clothes moths.

The house and closet could be cleaned with vacuum cleaner periodically.

Looking For All Natural Insecticide Products

Some suggestions for companion gardening within your vegetable garden, is to plant garlic along with bush beans, as it is believed that they repel aphids. On this note you could also plant them amongst your roses. The lavender plant also placed near roses can deter aphids from even coming near them.

Pretty much any plant that is known to be an natural insecticide or a natural insecticide repellent, can be placed throughout the garden and amongst your flower beds, not only do they add too the beauty of your garden, but it also works for you by helping to keep those undesirable bugs out.

One of the advantages of growing plants that are natural insecticides is that they can be harvested throughout the year. You would then be able to harvest these natural insecticides to be used in sprays or powders, in and around your home.

One example would be the common housefly, all too often, especially in the warmer months, these little guys seem to sneak in the house. Instead of reaching for that can of fly spray try this instead.

Use the common old garden variety mint. The mint plant can be reduced and strained after soaking overnight and put into a spray bottle, add a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil and you’re finished. Spray the contents strategically around the home and you will find that houseflies will stay away. The odor of mint is not likeable to flies but we humans do like the smell, so we have a simple room deodorizer that helps to keep those pesky flies away.

Synthetic insecticides do not have to be in our lives, the chemical companies would argue that statement but there is a financial gain for them in having you believe that. All natural insecticide products are not plentiful on the shop floor but that is to your advantage as you can make your own cheaply and easily in as much quantity as you wish knowing full well you are protecting your home and keeping the health of your family in good order. The only part missing is the knowledge of how to make the all natural insecticide products.

Neem oil is extracted from the fruit and bark of the Neem Tree. Originally found on the Indian Subcontinent, this useful crop is now planted in tropical regions worldwide. Neem insecticide has been used for generations to deal with pests on crops as well as parasites on people and pets, both internal and external.

Mostly nowadays we use neem insecticide in the garden. It has a long-lasting affect on the total pest population in our gardens, by deterring feeding and stopping the reproductive cycle. Once used, you will not see an overnight drastic drop in insect numbers. But over a few weeks you will see your plants showing less signs of insect damage pest numbers fall.

It is possible to buy safe garden insecticides which contain a percentage of neem oil. But, to save money and know exactly what ingredients you are putting on your plants it is more economical to make your own. Simply buy pure neem oil and dilute with water, to which a little liquid soap, or insecticidal soap has been added.

The neem oil is available for under $40 for a quart. This might sound expensive, but you need hardly any to create your own homemade safe garden insecticide:

To make one gallon of neem insecticide you need only 4 teaspoons of neem oil, 1 tablespoon of liquid soap (insecticidal soap or mild dish-washing detergent could be used instead) and a gallon of water.

You can see that quart of neem oil will be making you safe garden insecticide for a long time to come. Neem insecticide is completely biodegradable, and used wisely will provide a safe pest free environment in your backyard.

Bed Bugs Spray - Factors To Consider When Using Insecticides To Kill Bed Bugs

Nothing is perhaps more annoying than waking up in the morning only to find huge bug bites all over your body. If this has happened to you, then chances are there is an infestation problem somewhere in your home or in your room. Making use of bed bugs spray can work wonders in getting rid of these nasty insects so here are some factors to consider.

Before making use of insecticides, one of the first things you need to do is first locate the source of the problem. Be sure to start first in your room while working around the entire house. If you discover it only in your room, then you may be able to stop them from multiplying by using bed bugs spray. On the other hand, if the problem is more widespread you may need to hire professional help.

Before utilizing an insecticide, be sure to thoroughly vacuum your entire room including your sheets, mattress, floor, carpet and even the furniture. Once that is finished, proceed to use a light mist of spray on your mattress and other areas where you may suspect there are bed bugs. Proceed to do this for several days and even up to a week if necessary.

When choosing bed bugs spray, which one you choose is entirely up to you but be sure to choose one that does not contain hazardous chemicals. If it is at all possible, be sure you sleep in a different room as you do not want to inhale chemicals as they may cause health risks. Most of all, be especially careful around children or pets when using bed bugs spray.
